Fashion v Sport Exhibition

The Fashion v Sport exhibition on show at the V&A Museum explores the relationship between the two industries and looks more closely at how they have come to work together over the past few years. From designers like Stella McCartney to sporting models such as David Beckham, the Fashion v Sport exhibition sees just how minutely the two worlds interact.

Inspired by street style and working in closer and closer collaboration over the years, fashion and sport have come to be synonymous in many people's eyes. With high fashion designers creating their own sportswear collections and sport and its players becoming the inspiration behind new and unusual fabrics, Fashion v Sport seems to be an even draw before the game has even kicked off.

Around 60 outfits are on display in the Fashion v Sport exhibition, with performance sportswear, sporting ranges and high fashion collections all demonstrating the ways in which one influences the other. Drawings, photos and films also examine how the fashion / sport garments are worn, branded and advertised, drawing yet more parallels between the two.

We may think of the slouchy tracksuit and the hooded top as the ultimate symbol of lazy dressing, but sportswear has long been making its mark on mainstream fashion. Tracing the customization of sports fashion from the collection of labels such as Nike and Adidas, whose own garments and trainers have carried fashion inspired decoration, Fashion v Sport also highlights the catwalk creations of Dries van Noten and Kim Jones who have transformed the simple jersey tracksuit into a stunning high fashion creation.

Sportswear is known to induce an addiction in some collectors, and the final part of the exhibition examines to just what extremes those fashion and sport lovers will go. Whether you feel the need to sleep outside the Adidas store to get your hands on the newest pair of trainers or simply can't live without buy a new branded pair a week, you will be delighted (or apalled) by the likes of Japanese fashion designer Hirofumi Kiyonaga. Kiyonaga has created a brand named after his own virtual football team, and consequently designs them two fashion collections each year. On display are also some of the more extreme fashion v sport cross overs, such as the handmade crocodile skin trainers from Nike and the diamond encrusted shoelaces from Ends.

For anyone who has a love of fashion or sport, the Fashion v Sport exhibition at V&A is certain to be a big hit. Running until Sunday 4th January 2009, tickets for the show cost £5.00 for adults, and £3.00 concessions.
