Everyman Belsize Park

There’s nothing quite as depressing as a cinema that doesn’t care. Sticky floors, poor sound quality, 12-year-olds throwing Jelly Babies at your head – we’ve all been there.  My latest cinema outing was slightly marred by a) the fact that I was one of two people in the theatre that wasn’t an usher and b) the very strong smell of feet – not mine, I checked.

However, I live in fear that one day my local cinema will realise that I’m the only one spending money there and close down – it’s cheap, it’s close and I can’t really complain. I’ll just grin, bear it and continue to pick sweeties out of my hair after films.

Therefore I’m more than a bit gutted by the fact that I don’t live near the new Everyman Belsize Park that’s opening in December. For those of you not au fait with high quality cinemas in London, the original Everyman Cinema Club is Hampstead’s answer to the glitter and glamour at Leicester Square, without the high prices and the tourists. Cushy red sofas, quality films and refreshments that are about as far from a pick-n-mix as you can get: think white chocolate-covered raspberries and wasabi-roasted broad beans, along with bottles of wine from £15.

Everyman Belsize Park was formerly Screen on the Hill - Everyman Media Group bought it in March 2008 and have been refurbing it since October. Alongside the signature Everyman seats (all the ones at Everyman Belsize Park will recline for maximum indulgence), they’re also promising waiter service and an improved food range, including the intriguingly-named Treat Box. They’ll also be continuing the events and screenings which is yet another part of what Everyman does best - it’s not even open yet and it’s already managed to score a preview of the latest Baz Luhrmann epic, Australia, starring Nicole Kidman and Huge Jackman.

So although Belsize locals may be mourning the loss of Screen on the Hill, I for one will be jumping on the Northern Line to see Everyman Cinema Club’s latest new cinema when Everyman Belsize Park opens up in a few weeks.

Anyone want to share a sofa?
